State Opposes Appeal of Betting Ruling

State Opposes Appeal of Betting Ruling
By SEAN O’SULLIVAN The News Journal Attorneys for the state of Delaware formally responded to the emergency effort to stop sports betting before it starts. They charge the four national sports leagues and the National Collegiate Athletic Association have "not shown exceptional circumstances" exist to justify having the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals step in. "Plaintiffs cannot show that Delaware’s sports lottery will have serious consequences and cannot show that the immediate appeal is their only means of effective challenge," wrote attorney Andrew Bouchard on behalf of Delaware. The sports leagues are appealing a ruling earlier this month by Chief District Judge Gregory M. (Read the full post about ‘State Opposes Appeal of Betting Ruling’…)

MLB: Martinez returns for Phillies as Road Chalk

MLB: Martinez returns for Phillies as Road Chalk
Pedro Martinez takes to the mound for his newest team, the Philadelphia Phillies, and is greeted with a warm reception by Sportsbook.com’s odds-makers, as they have made him a -110 road favorite in Chicago against the Cubs. Bettors aren’t exactly on the bandwagon yet though, as over 60% of them at Sportsbook.com are backing the hosts in early action. The Phillies finally feel Martinez is ready to return to form. The 37-year-old right-hander makes his Philadelphia debut and his first appearance in almost a year Wednesday night at Wrigley Field. The last time Martinez took the mound in the majors, he allowed five runs and struck out nine in six innings, but didn’t receive a decision in a 7-6 win over the Cubs on Sept. The Ashes 2009 – Paddy Power’s Fourth Test Betting Preview

Jonathan Trott is 9/2 to score a century for England in Friday’s Headingley Fourth Test according to Irish bookmaker Paddy Power.

With Ravi Bopara looking far from comfortable at England’s troublesome number three spot Trott is 11/8 to step in with a half century and 5/1 to top score in England’s first innings should he play.

Freddie Flintoff’s injury concerns is also putting a lot of speculation on England’s likely bowling line up with Stuart Broad’s form with the ball leaving many questions to be answered on England’s likely attack. 888.com Says It Is Nearing a Purchase

888.com Says It Is Nearing a Purchase
An online gambling company, 888, said Monday that it was close to making an acquisition after strong trading from its casino, bingo and sports betting Web sites led to an improved overall performance in the second quarter, Reuters said. The chief executive, Gigi Levy, told Reuters that 888 is in talks with a number of potential targets and expects a deal to be completed soon. "One of them is very close to closing. It’s a bolt-on but would help us in our business-to-business strategy. A few others are at an earlier stage," Mr. Levy said in a telephone interview. To fund acquisitions, Mr. Levy said he is confident the company could raise an amount of at least one times Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization). Shuler, Meeks Co-Sign Anti-Gambling Letter
Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), a former Washington Redskins quarterback, was among three members of Congress who sent a joint letter to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. urging him to scrutinize efforts to legalize sports betting in Delaware and New Jersey. The letter, dated Tuesday and also signed by Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (D-N.Y.) and Rep.
