The article details the process whereby internet café owners sell phone cards encrypted with sweepstakes entries for Internet playtime, allowing customers to play graphic representations of slots for prizes.

“The disagreement is playing out throughout the country as this often unregulated business model known as fringe gambling proliferates, vexing law enforcement agencies and consumer advocates concerned about fraud,” the NY Times observes.

A corruption “sting” operation instigated by the News of the World newspaper in the UK has left a three-time world snooker champ making excuses and embarrassed the controlling body for the sport. Snooker champ John Higgins has been suspended pending the outcome of investigations on allegations that he accepted an offer of $400,000 in the Ukrainian city of Kiev from undercover reporters in return for losing certain frames in matches to be played later this year.

Barry Hearn, chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, confirmed the suspension and said that that Higgins his manager, Pat Mooney, who was also filmed accepting the deal, had resigned from snooker’s governing body.

Hearn said that the interview had done major harm to his efforts to clean up snooker, which has been the subject of match-fixing and betting scams in recent years.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt so let down or kicked,” Hearn said.

Whilst most companies have been piling into Italy’s burgeoning online gambling market, Ladbrokes was this week extricating itself by selling off its Italian retail betting and gaming business to an affiliate of Italian gaming group Cogetech for about €5.25 million in cash.

The price is subject to adjustment based on the actual net financial position of the business at the time of completion of the sale, and any proceeds will be used to pay down debt.

Part of the agreement is that Cogetech will assume responsibility for about €18 million of guarantees currently provided by Ladbrokes.
