Betting Lines May Be Short The Kentucky Derby is the crown jewel of gambling for the state of Kentucky. It is the precise reason that Governor Steve Beshear attempted to seize 141 online gambling domain names. The governor did not want revenue from the Derby being lost to these sites.
Now it appears that his worst nightmare may come true. With rain in the forecast for Saturday’s running of the Kentucky Derby, many Kentucky residents may decide to skip the bad weather and gamble on the race online.
“Already, gambling on the Derby has shifted towards online betting,” said observer Tristan Jumbleton, “If the weather does not co-operate tomorrow then there is a strong chance that online gambling on this year’s Kentucky Derby will hit record numbers.”
The Kentucky gambling industry has been declining in recent years and Governor Beshear attributes that to the Internet. His lawsuit seeking to seize the online gambling domain names was initially won, however, a Court of Appeals reversed the lower courts decision.
The Kentucky Derby is one of the most celebrated horse races in the US. Despite the efforts of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, Internet gambling has grown drastically over the past couple of years.
Representative Barney Frank is expected to introduce legislation next week that would overturn the UIGEA and set the framework for regulation of the online gambling industry in the US.
