<img src="http://thrombosite.com/wp-content/uploads/a-weekend-with-daniel-negreanu-announced-0.jpg" alt="'A Weekend with Daniel Negreanu' Announced" title="'A Weekend with Daniel Negreanu' Announced" align="left"/" alt="'A Weekend with Daniel Negreanu' Announced" title="'A Weekend with Daniel Negreanu' Announced" align="left"/> Daniel Negreanu has announced a special treat for well-heeled players looking for some high-end, personal poker instruction. Negreanu’s “A Weekend with Daniel Negreanu” seminar has been set for August 8-10, 2008, and bills itself as offering both intimate, one-on-one poker training and an exclusive Las Vegas experience.

Negreanu will play host to a maximum of 18 players, each of whom will pay $15,000 to take part in the weekend. The guests will spend much of the weekend at the Venetian, where the poker instruction will take place, and sidelights during the weekend include a barbecue at Negreanu’s Las Vegas house and a VIP night on the town, like a high-stakes poker pro.

“I’m very
excited to offer poker players an immersive weekend of poker where I can give individual attention to each player’s game,” Negreanu stated. “The fact that the weekend is limited to 18 players will guarantee that I can work with each and every player and improve their game dramatically.”

The instruction part of the weekend includes Negreanu leading the group through seminars designed to teach both strategy and tactics. Negreanu will assess and seek to improve each player’s poker skills and performance during the weekend’s instruction. Seminar topics include pot odds, implied odds, bluffing, reading opponents, tournament and cash-game strategies, and online poker strategies. The final day includes an 18-player tourney where the learned concepts are put into play.

Noted pros Phil Hellmuth Jr. and Robert “Mr. Omaha” Williamson III will host the Kentucky Derby Poker Championship at Caesars Indiana on Saturday, May 3, after the running of the 134th Kentucky Derby.

The charity event features Hellmuth, Williamson, other poker pros and celebrities. The $2,500 buy-in tournament kicks off with a reception at 7 p.m., with the cards in the air at 8:30 p.m. Players can rebuy until the first break, at which time an add-on will be available.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit charities such as the international
Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre, which aids victims of floods and droughts, as well as the Health and Climate Foundation, an organization that works to eradicate malaria epidemics and other fatal diseases worldwide. What’s more, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Robby Albarado Foundation, a nonprofit that helps the homeless and financially less fortunate. The charities that will benefit are based in Louisville, KY and Africa.

Fifty percent of the buy-ins, rebuys and add-ons will go to the charities, while the other half will go to the player prize pool.

In what is sure to be a sight to behold, Hellmuth, an 11-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, will simultaneously play in and emcee the tournament. Williamson, a WSOP bracelet winner in Omaha, also will play.

“I’m really excited to be co-hosting this event with Robert Williamson III and to be supporting such an important cause,” Hellmuth said. “The climate is changing and the poor will be the hardest hit. Anything we can do to raise awareness of this issue and help save lives is important.”

For more information on the tournament or for those interested in donating to the charities, visit kentuckyderbypokerchampionship.org. Caesars Indiana is a short drive north or Louisville, Ky. The casino is running numerous satellites and freerolls for the Kentucky Derby Poker Championship throughout March and April. For more information, visit caesarsindiana.com.

The 2008 edition of Europe’s WSOP outpost will again be held at the same three London Clubs International casinos that hosted the inaugural event last year — St. James (Fifty), Leicester Square (The Casino at the Empire) and Marble Arch (Sportsman). The 2008 WSOPE will run from September 19th to October 1st, 2008, with the specific dates for the events still being worked on at this time.

Betfair returns as the title sponsor for the series, and boasts returning WSOPE Main Event champion Annette “Annette_15″ Obrestad of Norway as one of its pro-player
endorsers. The young Internet star proved that her online success was no fluke as she topped a field of the world’s finest, including former WSOP ME winners and poker legends Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan. Obrestad’s victory was worth 1 million ($2,013,102), the largest poker prize ever won by a woman. Obrestad remains too young to compete in US-based WSOP events, with their higher age-21 minimum, but will be on hand in London to defend her title.

“It was a clean sweep for the Europeans last year,” said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. “There are many, many talented players in the European poker community and I think it caught some of the world’s best known poker players by surprise. It’s safe to say the pros haven’t forgotten about last year and the young guns should expect a tougher fight in 2008.”

“Last year produced a fantastic tournament which exceeded all expectations,” said David Yu, CEO, Betfair, also noting that online qualifiers for WSOPE have begun on the site.

The results yielded some interesting first round match-ups. Online phenom Jonathan “FieryJustice” Little will be pitted against eight-time WSOP bracelet winner Erik Seidel. Fellow online specialist Tom “durrrr” Dwan also caught a tough draw against 1989 WSOP Champion and 11-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth. Clonie Gowen, whose 2007 NBC Heads-Up first round match was against Kristy Gazes, will go against another formidable female player this year when she squares off against Jennifer Tilly.

Mike Matusow and Joe Hachem met up at the 2005 WSOP final table and will
And then there’s the match between Sammy Farha and Doyle Brunson, who have probably played against each other more times than either can count.

The 2008 competition uses the unique Duplicate Poker format, in which players at different tables are dealt the same cards, from an in-common deck used across all tables. Success in this poker format — which is recognized as a “skill game” and is legal in most U.S. jurisdictions — is done by ranking the players based on how well they played the cards when compared to opponents at other tables who were dealt the same hands.

The Duplicate Poker World Championship will offer both online and live segments of play. Qualifiers
have been running since early February and will continue until September 14th. The 180 qualifiers from the 30 weeks of online qualifying will move on to regional play, which in turn will be followed by quarterfinal playoffs. The regional and quarterfinal rounds will also be held online.

Quarterfinal winners will be placed onto regional teams of seven players each.
The 2008 COPC features five events and a total prize pool projected to exceed $1.3 million, with the $5,000-buyin Main Event (which starts on March 6) unique in that it’s a heads-up format, limited to 128 players, unlike the large-field freezeouts that mark most other poker gatherings. The complete schedule of events is as follows; all are no-limit hold’em variants:

Date Event

3-5 $500 Freezeout Charity Event
3-6 $5,000 Main Event (Day 1) —
Heads-Up, 128-player max
3-7 $1,500 Short-Handed (6-player tables)
3-8 $1,000 Freezeout
3-9 $500 Freezeout

The first day’s charity event is capped at 250 players, with a portion of the proceeds donated to breast-cancer research. The main event is expected to be filmed for later broadcast, and the last COPC drew a good selection of well-known players, including Antonio Esfandiari, Andy Bloch, Nenad Medic, Huck Seed, and Canadian stars Greg ‘FBT’ Mueller and Brad ‘Yukon’ Booth.

<img src="http://thrombosite.com/wp-content/uploads/nbc-headsup-poker-championship-invitations-announced-0.jpg" alt="2008 NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship Invitations Announced" title="2008 NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship Invitations Announced" align="left"/" alt="2008 NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship Invitations Announced" title="2008 NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship Invitations Announced" align="left"/> Professional poker players are checking their mailboxes now that NBC has officially begun the invitation process for NBC’s 4th Annual National Heads-Up Poker Championship. The first twenty invitations for the 64-player event have been issued, starting the now-traditional discussion and debate about who’s in and who’s out of the coveted and popular event.

It came as no surprise that the “first twenty” was replete with WSOP Championship winners, including Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Chris Ferguson, Scotty Nguyen, Jamie Gold and Jerry Yang. Former National Heads-Up champs Ted Forrest (2006) and Paul Wasicka (2007) were also represented in the first group of invitations. Five-time WSOP bracelet
winner Phil Ivey made the early list of invitees along with fellow WSOP bracelet holders Jennifer Harman, Barry Greenstein, Mike Matusow, Howard Lederer, Annie Duke, and Antonio Esfandiari.

WPT winners Erick Lindgren, Gavin Smith, and Jonathan “Fiery Justice” Little also made it into the first group. This is the first NBC Heads-Up invite for Little and along with the inclusion of online heads-up specialist Brian “sbrugby” Townsend, may represent NBC’s growing awareness of the skill and popularity of online players. Actress Shannon Elizabeth also made it into the first twenty. Last year Elizabeth was one of the more controversial picks, but her advance to the semifinals made her selection more likely this year.

While NBC has done an admirable job of selecting among poker’s top talent for its event, they have also shown some deference toward industry and celebrity players, creating opportunities for discussion among poker fans. Although experienced players, past invitations to LA Lakers owner Jerry Buss, actor James Woods, Celine Dion’s manager/husband Rene Angelil and Las Vegas attorney David Chesnoff each drew fire as being somewhat controversial selections.

There are no guarantees for the next round of invitees, but it would be hard to imagine NBC would “shuffle up and deal” without its 2005 Heads-Up champ, former WSOP Champion and eleven-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth. The short list of other likely invitational candidates includes Daniel Negreanu, Huck Seed, TJ Cloutier, Erik Seidel and Carlos Mortensen, each of whom have made the invitation cut every year since the event’s inception. It also remains to be seen whether NBC will give the nod to 2007 WSOP Heads-Up Champion Dan “rekrul” Schreiber. Although a relative newcomer to the B&M world, the young Schreiber’s bracelet has obvious relevance and he has made a name for himself in the online poker and gaming space.

The 2008 National Heads-Up Poker Championship will take place Feb. 29th – Mar. 2nd at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and will begin airing on NBC in April.
